President Jacob Zuma will only respond to six questions in the National Assembly next month, Parliament said on Thursday, prompting a demand from the Democratic Alliance (or DA) for an additional session.

DA chief whip John Steenhuisen said he was told at the National Assembly programming committee that "at the Presidency's behest" the March 11 session would not deal with questions that Zuma failed to answer in the chaotic sitting of August 21.

Speaker Baleka Mbete adjourned that sitting after the Economic Freedom Fighters chanted "pay back the money" at Zuma when he was posed a question on the Nkandla controversy, leaving three questions unanswered.

The Presidency, in response to Steenhuisen on Thursday, said Zuma had responded to the unanswered questions in writing.

Feuding parties in Lesotho's ruling coalition will face off on Saturday in early national elections staged in a bid to restore stability six months after an attempted coup.

The vote is being held around two years ahead of schedule under a political deal brokered by South Africa, which surrounds the mountainous kingdom.

Lesotho's prime minister, Thomas Thabane, briefly fled to South Africa in August after soldiers occupied police headquarters and encircled his palace.

Thabane accused his deputy Mothetjoa Metsing of working with the army to oust him, an allegation dismissed by Metsing and the military.

Campaigning had been largely peaceful but analysts say tensions were high before the parliamentary vote that would pit Thabane's All Basotho Convention  against Metsing's Lesotho Congress for Democracy alongside other parties.

Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene says the process of selling off non-core State assets is at an advanced stage and that he cannot comment on the matter due to the market sensitivity.

Nene was briefing the Select Committee on Finance and Appropriations in Parliament on Thursday where he said naming the entities from which assets were being sold from was also not ideal while the transactions were still under way.  He asked Members of Parliament (or MPs) to be patient.

The Minister announced the sale of non-core assets in October last year when he tabled his Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement. The process was seen as  government’s way of financing State-owned entities without impacting on the budget deficit.

Also making headlines:

Boko Haram bombers killed 23 people on Thursday, authorities said, as the Islamist insurgents fought back against a military offensive launched by Nigeria and three neighbouring countries.

The South African National Roads Agency on Thursday outlined the benefits of its proposed R5.3-billion De Beers Expressway, saying this would result in significant relief in congestion on the Van Reenen’s Pass route.

And, Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said business and diplomatic travellers from South Africa's Brics partners would receive port of entry visas into the country.
