South Africa could soon pull out of the International Criminal Court (or ICC) President Jacob Zuma said yesterday.

Zuma was giving his assessment of the African Union (or AU) summit, which had just ended in Ethopia.

He noted that he and his fellow leaders had discussed Africa’s growing concerns with the manner in which the ICC had conducted itself in relation to African countries.

Zuma told the AU Summit that South Africa was seriously reviewing its participation in the Rome Statute and will announce its decision in due course.

His threat to withdraw from the ICC came in the wake of the last AU summit, in Sandton last June which was attended by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who is a fugitive from the ICC for alleged atrocities in Darfur.

Ethiopia urged international donors yesterday to offer aid promptly for relief operations to support 10.2-million people critically short of food, and said it was committed to allocating as much of its own funds as necessary.

Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonen was speaking beside UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon during a tour of an area where one of the worst droughts in decades had left children malnourished, killed livestock and damaged livelihoods.

The relief operation by the government, World Food Programme (or WFP) and charities needed $1.4-billion this year. The government said donors had covered about 30% so far. The WFP said $500-million was needed to continue operations beyond April.

The programme was started more than a decade ago, and experts say the crisis would have been far greater without it.

The EFF has called for the removal of Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane from cabinet.

This came after he allegedly formed part of the Gupta delegation of the Tegeta exploration and resources, to visit Glencore in Switzerland and negotiated the purchase of Optimum Colliery.

EFF national spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi accused Zwane of using taxpayer’s money in order to secure business interests for the Guptas.

He said Zwane had always served the Gupta family while Glencore was known for manipulating accounting practices to erode the tax base of African countries.

Zwane also reportedly played a role in the private jet carrying guests for a Gupta wedding in Sun City, landing at Waterkloof Airforce Base in 2013.

Attempts to get comment from Zwane's office were unsuccessful.

Also making headlines:

The Presidency said President Jacob Zuma has welcomed the outcome of the 26th Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union, in Addis Ababa.

And, Cope members said that they were ready for the 2016 local government elections.
