Zuma receives higher education report from Heher Commission

President Jacob Zuma has received the final report of the Heher Commission on the feasibility of free higher education and would make it public in due course, his office said today.

The Chairperson of the Commission, Judge Jonathan Heher, presented the report to the President at his Genadendal residence in Cape Town.

Zuma established the commission in January 2016 after university students protests against planned increases shut down several campuses and delayed examinations.

The commission was initially expected to finalise its work within eight months, but this was extended to the end of June this year.

SABC board candidates quizzed on Madonsela report

The ghosts of the South African Broadcasting Corporation surfaced during the first round of interviews for new members of the public broadcaster’s board yesterday.

Each of the candidates were asked how they would have handled former public protector Thuli Madonsela’s report into the SABC, “When Governance and Ethics Fail”, and what they would do to ensure the new board did not go down the same path to dissolution.

The general response was that the relevant laws and regulations should be adhered to and that there should be consequences for those who overstepped the line.

It was the first of three days of interviews before Parliament’s communications portfolio committee. Leanne Govindsamy, Rufus Kharidza, Michael Sass and Louise Vale were the first candidates to be interviewed.

ANC calls for Mandela Bay to be put under administration

The ANC in the Nelson Mandela Bay Region has asked MEC of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Fikile Xasa, to place the municipality under administration, saying governance and service delivery have collapsed in the city.

In a statement, the ANC Nelson Mandela Bay Region said mayor Athol Trollip had failed to govern the municipality and was preoccupied with infighting within the coalition and ousting deputy mayor Mongameli Bobani.

The ANC said they had contacted Xasa and asked him to invoke Section 139 of the Constitution and place the metro under administration.
