South African government calls Trump tweet on land reform "narrow"

South Africa's government in an official tweet today rejected US President Donald Trump's tweet on land reform as a "narrow perception" that divides the nation.

The outspoken US President’s tweet comes after a Fox News report on land expropriation in South Africa.

Trump’s tweet asked his secretary of State to look into land expropriation and the killing of white farmers in South Africa.

In a response South African government rejected the tweet which it said was seeking to divide the nation and to remind the country of its colonial past.

One in three chance of South Africa recession this year

South Africa's economy probably struggled to gain traction in the second quarter after shrinking at the start of 2018, according to a Reuters poll of economists who said there was a one in three chance of recession this year.

Around 30 economists polled expect Africa's second-largest economy to grow by 1.4% this year and by 1.9% next, slightly lower than the median view last month.

Economist at BNP Paribas, Jeffrey Schultz said the risk was that the services-driven sector, particularly financial services, fared poorly again in the second quarter, which could be the difference between whether South Africa avoids slipping into a recession or not.

Duduzane Zuma's culpable homicide case postponed to October

The case against the son of former president Jacob Zuma, Duduzane, was today postponed for two months at the Randburg Magistrate's Court to allow the defence time to study case files.

The accused faces two charges of culpable homicide and an alternative count of negligent driving.

State prosecutor Yusuf Baba told the court that case files were only provided to the defence last week on Friday.

Zuma's lawyers told Magistrate Heidi Barnard that they would be ready to proceed on October 26. 

Former president, Jacob Zuma, sat next to his son during the brief appearance.
