National Prosecuting Authority (or NPA) deputy director of public prosecutions Nomgcobo Jiba says she feels vindicated after charges of fraud and perjury against her were dropped in the Specialized Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria.

“Naturally I am a human being like any of you … I must say, I do feel vindicated and I do feel relieved,” Jiba told reporters outside the court.

National director of public prosecutions Shaun Abrahams announced on Tuesday, that charges against Jiba would be formally withdrawn in court.

Jiba was set to go on trial on Wednesday on charges which related to her decision to prosecute Johan Booysen, the head of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, on racketeering charges.

The US on Tuesday put pressure on political leaders in South Sudan by announcing it was consulting with other countries about imposing United Nations (or UN) sanctions on anyone who undermined the peace process in the war-hit East African State.

Susan Rice, President Barack Obama's national security adviser, said in a statement that Washington was proposing such sanctions "if an agreement is not signed by the government within 15 days and a cease-fire is not implemented promptly by all parties."

On Monday, South Sudan President Salva Kiir declined to sign a peace deal proposed by regional leaders, saying he required more time.

The country, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, descended into chaos in December 2013 when a political row between Kiir and his deputy Riek Machar spiralled into armed conflict that reopened ethnic fault lines.

Parliament on Tuesday evening adopted the report by its ad hoc committee on Nkandla, which exonerated President Jacob Zuma from paying for non-security features.

The final votes came in at 198 in favour of the adoption and 93 against.

Democratic Alliance (or DA) MP John Steenhuisen had asked for an amendment to the report and provided at least 20 changes but this was rejected by the majority of members.

The ad hoc committee had earlier in the month given its approval to Police Minister Nathi Nhleko’s report on the Nkandla homestead, despite objections from its opposition members.

Nhleko found that Zuma did not owe a cent, which was in contrast to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s proposed remedial actions.

DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane said in the National Assembly on Tuesday that the party would be forced to approach the Western Cape High Court later in the week.
