The EFF has not yet decided which political party it would partner with to form a coalition government in various hung municipalities, but the removal of President Jacob Zuma was a non-negotiable condition if the ruling party wished to partner with it, the EFF said yesterday.

The EFF is seen as a kingmakers in five key metros, especially in Gauteng, where the ANC and the DA were unable to get 50% or more of the vote as horse trading hots up before the Friday deadline to form councils.

The decision to increase fees comes down to individual universities and not the ministry of higher education, Minister Blade Nzimande said yesterday.

He said he did not want to take problems that had nothing to do with him.

He said fees were decided by individual institutions legally.

Nzimande urged student formations to make a submission to the presidential commission so that they could "influence it".

The ANC’s Tshwane mayoral candidate Thoko Didiza has left it to the last minute to register as a candidate on the IEC’s lists for that council.

ANC regional spokesperson Tebogo Joala confirmed that Didiza had registered yesterday after the party was notified by the municipality of the deadline.

The Tshwane council was set to have its first meeting on Friday, during which councillors were expected to elect a mayor and speaker.
