Rogue' ANC MPs top discussions as party presidential hopefuls reach out to branches

The campaign to become the ANC's next president hit overdrive this weekend as presidential hopefuls occupied several stadiums and podiums across the country to engage with branches of the party.

The front runners in the race - former African Union commission chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa attended several engagements in Gauteng, with Dlamini-Zuma even addressing an ANC Free State cadres' forum.

ANC national executive committee member Lindiwe Sisulu took her "It's a MUST" message to parts of the Western Cape.

Dlamini-Zuma's "NDZ" campaign seems to have found its second wind, following the ANC's narrow win in the motion of no confidence ballot on August 8, which was brought up by opposition parties against President Jacob Zuma.

ANCYL KZN in court over Kathrada memorial disruptions

The regional secretary of the ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal and some of his supporters will appear in the High Court in Durban today on contempt of court charges related to disruptions at ANC stalwart Ahmed Kathrada's memorial service in April.

The interdict against Thanduxolo Sabelo and supporters was granted by Judge Rashid Vahed ahead of the memorial when the organisers, The Active Citizens Group, approached the court over fears for the safety of axed finance minister Pravin Gordhan who was going to address the gathering.

Vahed said the league were not allowed to harass or intimidate anybody at the memorial.

Sabelo promised that they would behave, but would correct ''distortions'' of the truth.

However, the memorial of April 9 at the Sastri Hall in Durban soon descended into chaos when ANCYL supporters started shouting at and singing over speakers, and heckled them, including Gordhan.

And, Computer thieves hit Competition Commission

Daring thieves broke into the offices of the Competition Commission and stole two laptops from the division that investigates cartels.

Sipho Ngwema, the head of communications at the Competition Commission, revealed at the weekend that there was a “security breach” at the offices of statutory body.

Two laptops were stolen on Tuesday, 8 August 2017, from the division responsible for investigations into cartel conduct.

Ngwema said the matter has been reported to the South African Police Service. The case has subsequently been transferred to the Hawks for further investigation.
