A collision between two trains at Denver station, south of Johannesburg, on Tuesday morning, left an unknown number of people injured and a train safety officer dead.

Gauteng spokesperson for the train service Lillian Mofokeng said a Metroplus and business train collided at Denver station.

Mofokeng said it was unknown how many people were injured.

She said paramedics are currently on the scene working to free trapped passengers from the carriages, adding that the trains between Johannesburg and Pretoria will be affected.

Togo's main opposition candidate complained on Monday of widespread irregularities in Saturday's presidential election and called for the announcement of results to be halted.

Results issued earlier on Monday from six of the 42 voting districts put President Faure Gnassingbé ahead with 64% of the vote and his nearest rival, Jean-Pierre Fabre, on 33%. The remaining votes were shared between the three other candidates.

Gnassingbé is widely favoured to win a third term, extending his family's long hold on leadership. He has held power in Togo since 2005, when his father died after 38 years in charge.

However, Fabre's CAP 2015 coalition sent a letter to Issoufou Taffa Tabiou, the head of the election commission, laying out a series of complaints over the process.

Amongst the complaints was that the initial figures produced by the election commission did not match the results CAP 2015 members had recorded at polling stations.

Fabre's party said that the number of votes cast exceeded the number of registered voters in at least nine constituencies in the north, a stronghold for the president.

The first part of power utility Eskom’s intensive maintenance drive has been completed without the parastatal not having to implement load-shedding over the weekend.

The State-owed utility on Friday embarked on a three-day maintenance “festival” to improve the performance and reliability of its power generating units ahead of the expected peak winter demand.

A number of generating units, equating to 2 303 megawatts (or MW), were taken offline for planned maintenance and broken down units were repaired, bringing 1 453 MW of generating capacity back to service over the weekend.

Currently, 64% of Eskom’s installed baseload power stations were past their midlife, requiring longer outages and extended restoration time than planned.

Newly appointed acting CEO Brian Molefe said the focus of the maintenance festival was to ensure long-term reliability of the plant, as well as to restore units that are currently offline due to technical faults.

However, despite this, the utility warned that the power system would remain significantly constrained during the rest of the week.
