Cosatu won't join general strike on Wednesday

The Congress of South African Trade Unions today distanced itself from a planned national strike against a proposed minimum wage and amendments to labour laws.

Cosatu's rival, the South African Federation of Trade Unions yesterday said it would embark on a general strike on Wednesday over what it termed "the biggest attacks on working-class people, trade unions and the poor" since the end of apartheid.

Saftu has slammed a planned national minimum wage of R20 per hour or R3 500 a month and amendments to labour laws and is also angry over economic hardships facing workers and the poor.

The federation said it would rally its affiliates and allies in civil society to demand "action to end the country’s crisis of unemployment, poverty and inequality", and urged unions aligned to Cosatu to also join.

But Cosatu said it was concerned by "misleading statements" from some Saftu leaders over its participation in the strike.

Ramaphosa arrives in Luanda ahead of the SADC Double Troika Summit

South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in Luanda, Angola, today for the Extraordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community Double Troika which will consider the political and security environment in the SADC region, particularly the kingdom of Lesotho and preparations for elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ramaphosa will lead the South African government delegation, which holds the SADC chair.

In a statement, the presidency said that the Extraordinary Summit of the Double Troika is "expected to consider the political and security environment in the SADC region, paying specific attention to the implementation of SADC decisions relating to the Kingdom of Lesotho and the preparations for elections in the DRC.

"The Summit will also review the prevailing political and security developments in the Republic of Madagascar."

ANC says KZN is ready for elective conferences

Provincial and regional elective ANC conferences in KwaZulu-Natal will go ahead, the party said yesterday.

The province is currently being led by an interim task team, after aggrieved members successfully challenged the results of the party's 2015 provincial conference in court and won.

Speaking during a briefing yesterday, party secretary-general Ace Magashule said there was unanimous agreement that the ANC was ready for regional and provincial conferences. He said the ANC was happy that its structures had ensured unity and cohesion in the province.

The party had deployed its top six leaders and members of the NWC across the different regions of KwaZulu-Natal to listen to structures on the challenges facing the province.
