South African power utility Eskom restarted rolling blackouts on Friday. This is the sixth straight day of power cuts to hit Africa's most advanced economy.

South Africa is in the middle of its worst electricity crisis since 2008 and its citizens are subjected to frequent controlled blackouts, which Eskom implements to prevent the grid from collapsing.

Eskom said it would cut 2 000 megawatts of power from the grid from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm.

An Egyptian soldier was killed and five wounded on Thursday when roadside bombs hit two military armoured vehicles in the Northern Sinai region.

An army spokesperson said two bombs hit an armoured vehicle in the town of Sheikh Zuweid killing a noncommissioned officer and wounding three other soldiers.

In response, a military helicopter killed three "terrorist elements" in a car while fleeing the scene.

North Sinai is at the heart of an insurgency that has killed hundreds of soldiers and police since 2013 when then-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ousted Islamist president Mohamed Mursi. Sisi was eventually elected president in 2014.

The Department of Energy (or DoE) has announced the names of 13 projects that have been accepted in the fourth bidding window of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (or REIPPPP).

The 13, which would make up 1 121 megawatts installed capacity on the national grid, were selected from a tightly competitive field of 77 proposals.

Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson said that the successful round four bids, amounting to around R23-billion in value, were expected to create over 7 000 jobs during construction, with 1 000 permanent operational jobs. Over 27 000 jobs are expected to be created over a 20-year period.

The Minister expected financial close of these projects in the fourth quarter of this year, with commissioning of the projects expected from November 2016.

The largest slice of the bids was allocated to onshore wind energy, at 676 MW.

Solar photovoltaic energy made up 415 MW, with 25 MW being allocated to biomass and 4.7 MW to small hydro.

Also making headlines:
Guinean authorities have confirmed at least nine new cases of Ebola in the southwest region of Forecariah near the border with Sierra Leone.

The Ebola-stricken nations of West Africa are asking international donors to cancel their debts and give them over $5-billion over two years to rebuild their economies, which have been devastated by the deadly disease.

And, more than three-million of the world's poorest people have been forced from their homes, land and jobs over the past decade by World Bank-funded projects, and the global lender has vowed to review its policies.
