The African National Congress announced its mayoral candidates for the 2016 local elections after hours of rigorous deliberation by its National Executive Committee in Tshwane this weekend.
ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe said the announcement was a culmination of an extensive process in its internal democracy.
The ANC retained Mayor Danny Jordaan as its mayoral candidate in Nelson Mandela Bay. It is said to be most contested metro.
The ANC decided on Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau as its candidate in the country's economic hub.
In Ekurhuleni, mayor Mondli Gungubele was notably replaced by Mzwandile Masina as the party candidate.
Other ANC mayoral candidates announced are Olly Mlamleli for Mangaung, Xola Phakathi for the Buffalo City Metro, Xolani Sotashe for the Cape Town Metro and Mzwandile Gumede for the eThekwini Metro.

The Gupta family has denied it attempted to capture the R51-billion Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa tender on behalf of a bidder in 2012, as alleged in a letter written by former CEO Lucky Montana.
The denial comes as the AmaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism, writing in the Sunday Times, revealed a new example of alleged state capture by the Guptas.
At the basis of the allegation is a letter that Montana wrote in 2012 to then Prasa board chairperson Sfiso Buthelezi.
In the letter, Montana accuses the Guptas and the president’s son Duduzane Zuma of trying to take control of Prasa’s board to ensure their alleged bidder – the China South Rail – won the R51-billion rolling stock tender to supply Prasa with 600 commuter trains.
This adds a new twist to the Prasa locomotive saga. It has seen the resignation of Montana and a report by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela that criticised Montana’s role in the matter.

The Democratic Alliance has launched an online petition against the purchase of a presidential jet.
In a speech prepared for delivery at a youth event in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, DA leader Mmusi Maimane said South Africa was experiencing a "chronic jobs crisis" and that the money for the proposed new plane could be better used in other areas.
He said the R4-billion could pay for work opportunities, support new entrepreneurs with start-up grants or to pay for full National Student Financial Aid Scheme bursaries.
The DA "unanimously rejected" the purchase of the plane and described it as a waste of public funds.
