The DA is deeply concerned about an open electrical box at a mast light in Khuma, near Stilfontein.
Community members alerted the DA about the situation after numerous reports to the municipality and the ANC councillor failed to get any reaction.
Whilst attending to the community complaint, the DA found an unlocked electrical box containing open wire connections and a electrical switch. Blackened and burnt wires, indicating a short circuit or an electrical malfunction, is also clearly visible.
The open box is easy to reach and poses a real danger to the residents of the area.
The DA’s on site investigation further revealed that Buitomele Xele, a 13-year old boy from Extension 6 , has to visit the box every evening to switch the light on, ensuring that residents have light in the area. It is also the children’s responsibility to switch it off during daytime, if they remember to do so.
It was reported that surrounding areas experience the same problems. In one case a mast light has broken off and is hanging to one side. It was as a result of the earthquake that hit the area in 2014.
It is unacceptable that vulnerable children are exposed to hazards like this. During our visit, children and toddlers were playing in the street right next to the electricity box.
Poor maintenance and management by the ANC-run council can easily lead to children being electrocuted.
The DA will write a letter to the Administrator Seth Ramagaga demanding an investigation to repair the problems. If no action is taken within 48 hours, we will be reporting this matter to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa.
All Communities have a right to be safe and our children should be protected at all times.
