I call on Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters, to implement the will of the people in her approach to contribute to the discussion on e-tolls.

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) and Department of Transport have announced plans to make representations to the Gauteng provincial government e-tolls review panel.

This announcement comes after vociferous anti e-toll campaigns by South Africans and civil society organisations, all of which have been sidelined by Minister Peters.

The about-turn by the Minister and Sanral comes as no surprise, as e-tolling was poorly implemented without due process being adhered to.

If Minister Peters intends to stand before the Gauteng panel, she should do so with the sole purpose of giving effect to the will of the people. She must not partner with Sanral to supress the voices of opposition.

As this is a national competence, the Minister must come clean as to whether recommendations emanating from the Makhura panel will be taken to Parliament (where it belongs) for consideration and implementation.

I will be tabling a members statement in this regard in Parliament this week. This would be an ideal opportunity for the Minister to finally clarify if she stands with the public at last.
