The Democratic Alliance (DA) was ahead in the hotly-contested Western Cape, according to the latest results released at the Independent Electoral Commission's centre in Pretoria around midday.

The DA had 426 643 votes while the African National Congress (ANC) was creeping towards a quarter of a million votes with 249 541.

The Congress of the People (Cope) had 77 717 votes, and the Independent Democrats (ID) 56 170.

A total of 858 397 votes had been counted in the province so far. There were 2 634 439 registered voters.

Voting patterns for the provincial and the national ballot were similar in the Western Cape.

In the City of Cape Town the DA led with 187 706 provincial votes. The ANC had less than half of this, with 70 952 votes going its way.

Cope had a large lead over the ID in the city with 16 742 votes, compared to the ID's 7 302.

The total votes counted so far for the municipality was 297 447, about 17% of the 1 719 878 voters registered in the city. Voter turnout was still unknown.

Votes have not yet been released for areas such as Mitchells Plain and Gugulethu.
