The DA rejects the notion that any person can pay back any portion of the R246 million public funds used for upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s private residence at Nkandla, other than President Zuma himself.

The comes after reports that KwaZulu-Natal tycoon, Philani Mavundla, has offered to raise funds and settle President Zuma's debt to South Africa, incurred at Nkandla.

The DA challenges President Zuma to reject this offer made by Mavundla and any other offers to pay back the public funds which he is personally liable to pay back.

Jacob Zuma as the President is charged with maintaining and upholding the Constitution of the Republic and must abide by it. As such he must act in accordance with Section 181 of the Constitution and ensure the effectiveness of the Public Protector by complying with her remedial action.

This requires that Jacob Zuma pay back that for which he is liable; not any other person.

Indeed President Zuma is on record as stating that “corruption is a Western paradigm”, but as President of a Constitutional democracy, President Zuma can not allow any other South African to absolve him from his personal liability in this matter.

Jacob Zuma must lead and take full responsibility for his actions that saw the abuse of public funds at Nkandla.

The DA maintains that Jacob Zuma, and only Jacob Zuma, must pay back every single rand owing at Nkandla.
