The DA has received a letter from the Chairperson of the Basic Education Portfolio Committee, Nomalungelo Gina, notifying us that the ‘Jobs for Cash’ report will be discussed in Committee this Friday.

This follows the DA’s request for the ‘Jobs for Cash’ report to be tabled in Parliament, and for the SADTU leadership to appear before the Committee to account for its role in the selling of teaching posts.

According to the Committee Chairperson, the purpose of the meeting is to “receive the perspective of the DBE on the matter as well as allow for engagement and collective way forward for the Portfolio Committee.”

We trust that Minister Motshekga will make herself available for the meeting so that we can engage her on the pressing political matters arising from the ‘Jobs for Cash’ report.

In particular, we want to hear from Minister Motshekga whether:

• She has reported the evidence of criminal activities carried out by SADTU members to the police for further action;
• She has requested the Minister of Police to dedicate resources to this investigation to ensure its expeditious resolution; and
• She has taken steps to free the six provinces captured by SADTU from the clutches of SADTU.

In her letter, the Committee Chairperson agreed that it is necessary to call SADTU before the Portfolio Committee, but did not commit to a time and date. At the meeting this Friday, the DA will raise this again to ensure that the SADTU leadership is held accountable for its role in this disgraceful corruption scandal.

There are signs that Minister Motshekga and her fellow ANC members on the Portfolio Committee are ready to take on their alliance partner SADTU. This is good news. It means we are moving closer to breaking SADTU’s stranglehold on our education system and putting our nation’s children first.
