The allegations, reportedly made by the Deputy Finance Minister, Mcebisi Jonas, in an affidavit submitted to the former Public Protector, Adv Thuli Madonsela, relating to her investigation into “state capture”, must be investigated by the Hawks.

The deputy minister reportedly claimed that Ajay Gupta, in the presence of Duduzane Zuma and Fana Hlongwane, offered him R600 000 in cash and a further R600 million, to be paid in installments, in return for supporting the nuclear build programme, at a meeting which took place on 23 October 2015 in Saxonwold.

The allegations, provide more detail about what took place at the meeting where the deputy minister was allegedly offered the finance minister’s job, and amount to further prima facie evidence of corruption in terms of the Prevention of Corrupt Activities Act (No. 12 of 2004).

An investigation by the Hawks [CAS 1200/3/2016] is already underway into this matter, following charges of corruption laid by myself against Atul Gupta, Ajay Gupta and Duduzane Zuma, in terms of the Prevention of Corrupt Activities Act (No. 12 of 2004), on 17 March 2016 at a police station in Cape Town.

And I will, therefore confirm, via a parliamentary question that the information, reportedly submitted to the Public Protector, as part of her investigation into state capture, has been submitted for investigation to the Hawks.
