The Democratic Alliance (DA) will on Thursday lobby the Cape Town city council to add its voice to the calls for President Jacob Zuma to resign.

Councillor Mzuvukile Nikelo would table the DA's motion.

The African National Congress (ANC)’s Khaya Yozi said they had tried to get the issue removed from the orders of the day in Council, but the request had been ignored.

"The motion is nothing but a political gimmick," he said.

"Council has no authority to remove the president. Section 11 of the Municipal System Act is explicit in terms of the executive authority and legislative authority of municipalities."

In Parliament, the ANC has repeatedly used its majority to defeat the DA's votes of no confidence in Zuma.
