Malawi opposition, the People's Party (PP), has called on President Peter Mutharika to reduce his number of advisers in order to aid the country's ailing economy, Malawi24 reported on Tuesday.

President of the PP, Uladi Mussa, lamented Mutharika's need for over 15 presidential advisers, claiming that the president was costing taxpayers K307 million as a result of his large entourage.

"We wonder for example whether it is necessary to have presidential advisers as many as the size of the cabinet, Mr speaker Sir, over 15, over 15 Mr Speaker and I don’t want to mention their names, who are advising one person and the person being advised seemed to behave as if he has not tasted advice,” Mussa was quoted as saying.

Mussa said this in parliament after he was given a chance to comment on Mutharika's recent State of the Nation address (SONA).

Mussa went further to criticise Mutharika for urging Malawians not to "panic" through tough economic times while his Cabinet was allegedly "sucking" taxpayers dry.

The Malawian leader had previously been issued with an ultimatum from opposition parties calling for his resignation within 90 days due to his failure to resolve the country's tough economic situation.

Kamlepo Kalua, Vice President of the People's Party, confirmed that the party had issued Mutharika with an ultimatum, saying that he should hand over power to a caretaker Government instead.

"Mutharika has failed the country, therefore, he has to resign, Kaula was quoted as saying in a previous Malawi24 report.
