COSATU unreservedly condemns the vandalism that is taking place on the railway lines in Cape Town. COSATU calls on drastic action by the police against these criminals who are sabotaging the economy of the country. COSATU further calls on employers to be considerate of the late arrival of workers in the light of this crisis.

COSATU calls on the City of Cape Town to move some of the My Citi busses to the affected areas to help alleviate the crisis of commuters. The people in Milnerton have private cars that they can use in the case of a crisis while the people from the Cape Flats have no alternative transport when this type of problem hits the transport system.

COSATU further calls on Metro Rail to start an urgent programme to move the cables above the ground and out of reach of criminals in order to ameliorate this problem. The situation has been ongoing for years and is now reaching crisis proportion and no coherent plan is emerging from Metro Rail to respond to the threat that exists to the system.

The challenge for commuters is becoming more of a crisis on a daily basis and Metro Rail demonstrates very little regard to commuters. As the system falls into further unreliability all Metro Rail does is push up the price of tickets, losing valuable social capital with commuters which is essential to respond to this scourge of vandalism on the trains.

We need an urgent plan that addresses the crisis and nothing is emerging and commuters are now left to the whims of a criminal element. The National Ministry must now intervene in this crisis that has no end in sight. Workers are losing money from wages and are facing disciplinary action from bosses as well.
