There will be no spilt in the Congress of the People (Cope) despite party difficulties, Eastern Cape chairperson Andile Nkuhlu said on Thursday.
"We want to allay some of the fears and conspiracy theories that this party is about to spilt," Nkuhlu told the media in Midrand.
The Cope elective conference was expected to begin on Thursday, however in a last minute meeting over rivalry relating to the party's leadership, it was decided that this would be a policy conference instead.
"With all the different challenges, we were able to avert a catastrophe," Nkuhlu said.
This came after a bitter divide among members about who would lead the party - its president Mosiuoa Lekota, or deputy president Mbhazima Shilowa.
"There were differences but I think we are able to say we are not enemies," said Nkuhlu.
