The Chamber of Mines was shocked and saddened to hear about the accident at the Lily gold mine in Mpumalanga this morning.
Chamber President Mike Teke said: “Our thoughts are with those who were involved in the accident. We are very pleased that, according to the latest reports, around 70 miners were able to reach surface unharmed, while observing all necessary safety measures. Management, unions and employees are to be commended for this.
“We also offer our appreciation for the work of the Mine Rescue Services, and specifically its volunteer members from Steelpoort who have been assisting in finding and rescuing the three people who are still missing and believed to have been in the collapsed lamp room on surface.”
