There was chaos at Durban's Absa Stadium during the Freedom Day celebration on Monday when people threw objects and disrupted President Kgalema Motlanthe's speech.
People loudly sang African National Congress (ANC) songs and the President had to stop his speech while ANC provincial chairperson Zweli Mkhize persuaded the crowd to listen to Motlanthe.
The disruptions began when people complained about the quality of sound at the stadium. Some continued singing despite Mkhize's call for calm.
People had gathering at the stadium as early as 8am where they were entertained by artists including Phuzekhemisi and Deborah Fraiser.
There was a celebratory mood at the stadium with scores of people wearing ANC T-shirts bearing the face of President-elect, Jacob Zuma.
Among the dignitaries attending the celebration were KwaZulu-Natal outgoing premier Sbu Ndebele, Arts and Culture Minister Pallo Jordan and Ethekwini Municipality mayor Obed Mlaba.
The unveiling of the Confederation Cup balloons was to take place after the President's speech.
