The CCMA is proud to announce the successful facilitation of the historic labour market accord between Phalaborwa Mining Company (PMC) and its stakeholders, including Organised Labour, Tribal Authorities, Local Government, Local Communities, Civic organisations including those representing unemployed persons and Business.
PMC is an open pit copper mine producing magnetite and vermiculite and is amongst the largest copper mines in the world. The mine has recently been acquired with a substantial financial investment to support further expansion. The mine is a major employer in the Phalaborwa region with currently approximately 2300 employees, with 2200 new employment opportunities expected to be created and having a positive cascading effect on economic activity in the area.
With a fairly stable labour relations environment, the company sought the CCMA facilitation assistance as it faced challenges in the community which had led to violent protests. The CCMA facilitated process assisted PMC and its stakeholders to reach an agreement to commit to the sustainability of the mine, create business and employment opportunities for locals and accrue benefits to the community.
Nerine Kahn the Director of the CCMA emphasised the momentous importance of this Accord, “As part of the CCMA’s new strategic plan Senz’umehluko making a difference, 2015/2016-2019/2020 the CCMA is committed to enhancing the labour market to advance stability and growth. A key part of this is our contribution to industry sustainability which results in employment security, labour market stability and economic growth.”
The process culminated in signing of the Social Pact, which is preamble with a commitment by all parties to co-operation. In congratulating all the stakeholders for their commitment to finding a facilitated solution that addresses the interests of all parties , Nerine Kahn committed the CCMA to continue to provide support to this initiative.
