STATEMENT ON WORLD CUP BY THE MINISTER OF SPORT AND RECREATION,
NGCONDE BALFOUR: WE'RE OUT - BUT THE WORLD CUP CONTINUES
The disappointment at being eliminated from the Cricket World Cup
is shared by all South Africans.
As we ponder on this setback and come to terms with the blow dealt
to our cup aspirations, let us remain mindful of the difficult time
currently being experienced by our players who represented us. We
need to acknowledge that it has not been an easy World Cup campaign
for us - made more difficult by factors over which the team had no
control.
Let us continue giving our players support and encouragement as
they prepare for the season ahead. At the same time, we extend our
best wishes to the teams that have advanced to the Super Six round,
especially Kenya as the representative of our continent. While our
campaign is over, South Africans can still look forward to
world-class cricket leading up to the final at the Wanderers in
Johannesburg on 23 March.
The World Cup has thus far been a major success for us as the major
host country and we can take pride from the fact that we have gone
beyond expectations in staging the event. Even in defeat, let us
demonstrate to the world that South Africa remains the venue of
choice for major sport events.
