The Auditor-General's report on provincial finances showed that the Democratic Alliance (DA) governed better than the African National Congress (ANC), the DA said on Wednesday.
Its Parliamentary spokesperson on cooperative governance James Lorimer was commenting on a report that rated the DA-run Western Cape the province with the best financial administration in 2009/10.
"It also marked a significant improvement on previous provincial audits, achieved when the ANC was in control of the province," Lorimer said.
"The results constitute further evidence that where the DA governs, it delivers a better run administration than the ANC."
A clean audit, such as the Western Cape's, required political leadership that did not micro-manage, allowed professionals to do their work, did not meddle with good appointments and did not mis-spend public money.
"We do not indulge in fruitless and wasteful expenditure; indeed, austerity has been one of the Western Cape's hallmarks," he said.
