The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) in partnership with Greater Taung local Municipality will host Youth Dialogue on arts, social cohesion and socio-economic participation as part of Africa Month celebrations. The dialogue will take place on Friday, 27 May 2016 at Taung Hotel School and Convention Centre, Greater Taung local Municipality in North West.

Through the dialogue, the department seeks to promote the engagement of young people on critical national matters; identify and streamline marginalised sectors of young people to participate in the socio-cultural dialogue and to bridge the gaps of cultural differences across racial lines to advance an important aspect of inclusivity.

Hosted as part of the Africa Month celebrations under the theme, “Building a Better Africa and a Better World”, the Youth Dialogue will bring together approximately 250 young South Africans from different backgrounds to engage on topical issues that impact their development. This dialogue will stimulate the debate on heritage and also highlight the opportunities available for the youth in relation to the Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE), the department’s strategic approach to economic empowerment and skills development.

The month of May has been declared Africa Month, to celebrate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963, it was on this date that  25 May was declared as Africa Day as a symbol of unity amongst all Africans. Africa Month also acknowledges the progress that we, as Africa have made and the Africa Month programme will feature all disciplines of arts, culture and heritage among African nations.

The Department of Arts and Culture believe that these interactions will strengthen young people’s identity, build their self-esteem and close intergeneration gaps. It is against this backdrop that the series of Youth Dialogues will also be organised in other provinces.
