Form er Haitian president Jean Bertrand Aristide arrived in Jamaica yesterday, two weeks after fleeing into exile in the Central African Republic, officials in the office of Jamaican Prime Minister Percival Patterson said.

Huntley Medley, an official in Patterson's office, said a plane carrying Aristide had touched down at Kingston's Norman Manley international airport.

Medley declined to provide any more details about the former Haitian president's immediate plans.

Aristide fled Haiti on February 29, ending weeks of violence, which left at least 70 people dead after opposition and rebel forces demanded his resignation.

He arrived in the Central African Republic the next day.

Aristide has claimed he was forced into exile as part of a plot managed by the US and backed by France.

Washington and Paris have strongly denied the claims.

In a protest, Haiti froze its diplomatic relations with Jamaica yesterday ahead of Aristide's arrival here and recalled its ambassador from Kingston. – Sapa-AFP.
