Ango
la will not back a second UN Security Council resolution on
Iraq because its terms are not widely accepted, a top Angolan
foreign ministry official said in an interview broadcast
overnight.
"We will not back this resolution, firstly because it was not voted
on and also because its terms are not accepted by anyone," Deputy
Foreign Minister Jorge Chicote told the Portuguese-language service
of the BBC.
"France, China and Russia strongly believe we should find a better
solution to the matter," he added according to a transcript of the
interview published on the website of BBC Brasil. "The spirit of
the Security Council is to try and negotiate and reach a
consensus."
Under an amended draft resolution presented to the Security Council
on Friday, Iraq would be faced with a March 17 final deadline to
disarm or face war.
The new draft resolution was drawn up by Britain and is backed by
the United States.
