The African National Congress (ANC) will join the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) in its countrywide protests against rising fuel and energy prices, its Gauteng leadership said on Monday.

"The march is one of the things that need to be done. The ANC takes up issues affecting people. Rocketing prices are not questionable," ANC provincial secretary in Gauteng, David Makhura, told reporters in Johannesburg.

"We must arrest this process," he added, following a Gauteng tripartite alliance summit that took place at the weekend.

He said the alliance would work with communities to address rising fuel prices. As part of the programme, land would be identified to enhance food security and agricultural production in the province.

The weekend summit also discussed next year's general elections and the recent xenophobic attacks.

Cosatu, which held protests in the Free State, Northern Cape, and Mpumalanga last week, was planning more mass action in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and North West on Wednesday, leading up to a national stayaway on August 6.
