The ANC appreciates and accepts the apology given by the Speaker. As the ANC we want to assure the staff of this legislature, especially black female staff, that we will always protect the interests of the workers.
We are also glad that in Helen Zille's Friday online letter she has admitted that the DA has problems dealing with race and that's why she called on her members to refrain from racial remarks.
One thing that we need to say to Helen Zille is that race is not a "card" as she calls it, and even her Mayor in Cape Town calls it. She calls dealing with race a strategy and not a fundamental human value.
What the DA needs is soul-searching. Changing the cosmetic features of her party is not enough. What is needed from you is to change policy of the DA and the hearts of DA members to one of non-racialism. The DA must shed the baggage of being a party which gave refuge to unreformed right wing racists. The buck ends with the leadership of the DA to facilitate the necessary transformation in their party and calling those in the party with racist views to order.
To the Speaker we want to say as the ANC we are watching the appointments in this legislature very carefully. We call on the DA to formulate and implement a policy on staff equity to prevent situations like this from ever arising.
