If it wasn't for the African National Congress's (ANC's) internal troubles in the Western Cape, the party would have made a clean sweep in the province over the Democratic Alliance (DA), acting African National Congress chairperson in the Western Cape Dipuo Letsie-Dube said on Thursday.

Infighting "overwhelmed" the party for a while but that has now settled and the campaigning is going well, she said on the side-lines of a visit to Silvertown, Paarl, by ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa.

"Had we had a proper strategy, I'm telling you, we would have surprised the DA," she said.

"They are at their weakest."

She is confident though that the party will retain its wards and increase its support in the metro.

Letsie-Dube stepped in after Marius Fransman was asked to step aside after allegations that he sexually assaulted a young woman.

Fransman denies this and is battling to get his job back, going as far as making a court application.

Faiez Jacobs, the ANC secretary in the province, was also on the campaign trail in the muddy streets.

Jacobs was eventually allowed to return to work after being found guilty by the party’s national disciplinary committee of assaulting a researcher.

The ANC has also had to deal with infighting over candidate lists.
