AfriForum Youth today announced on the main campus of the University of the Free State (UFS) that Christien Diedericks was this University’s winner of the youth organisation’s R20 000 study bursary.

The band Oros in ʼn lang glas provided lots of entertainment at this event.

AfriForum Youth announced the first competition winner at the University of Stellenbosch (US) and will announce two winners – from the North West University (NWU) and the University of Pretoria (UP) respectively – in the coming weeks.

This stems from the youth organisation’s announcement earlier the year that four Afrikaans students, one from each of these universities, could win these bursaries.

The bursary and study fund was established to benefit Afrikaans and students who want to study in this language. It also forms part of AfriForum Youth’s Afrikaans sal bly campaign.

According to Ju-Mari Pretorius, Campus Coordinator at UFS, donators and alumni who want to make contributions to the fund will not only make a difference in the lives of Afrikaans-speaking students, but also in the promotion and development of Afrikaans.

Pretorius also says that the fund is managed independently by Helping Hand, and won’t succumb to political pressure.

“We are committed to our language and will stand up for students’ right to study in their mother-tongues,” says Chantelle du Preez, Chairperson of AfriForum Youth’s branch at UFS.

Alumni or donators who want to contribute to AfriForum Youth’s study fund can email Evalna Pieterse at evalna@afriforum.co.za or SMS the word “Beurs” to 32687 SMS (R1).

Students at NWU and UP who have not yet entered, can SMS their name and campus name to 32687 to stand a change. These SMSs also cost R1.
