AfriForum Youth established a bursary and study fund in support of Afrikaans and students who wish to study in the language. Donators and alumni who want to make a contribution towards the fund will not only make a difference in the lives of Afrikaans speaking students, but also bring forth a difference in the promotion and development of Afrikaans.

The fund was established after the Universities of Stellenbosch (US), Pretoria (UP) and the Free State (UFS) decided last week to abolish Afrikaans as medium of instruction.

“These Universities made it clear that they are not interested in promoting indigenous languages and mother tongue education. AfriForum Youth is encouraging donators and alumni who invest in these Universities and are in favour of Afrikaans as medium of instruction, to reconsider their investment decisions,” says Morné Mostert, AfriForum Youth’s National Project Coordinator.

“The fund that was established by AfriForum Youth will be managed independently by helping hand and will not give in to political pressure,” adds Bernard Pieters, AfriForum Youth’s Campus Coordinator for Maties.

AfriForum Youth also recently announced that four Afrikaans speaking students at UP, US, UFS and North-West University (NWU) in Potchefstroom can each win a bursary worth R20 000. In order to be considered for the prize, students need to SMS their name and campus where they study to 32687 (R1).

Alumni or donators who would like to contribute to AfriForum Youth’s study fund can send an email to Evalna Pieterse at evalna@afriforum.co.za.
