The Northern Gauteng High Court in Pretoria today decided to hear AfriForum’s urgent application against the implementation of the new language policy of the University of South Africa (Unisa) tomorrow at 10:00.

According to Alana Bailey, Deputy CEO of AfriForum, Unisa’s new policy determines that Afrikaans will not be used as medium of instructions from 2017 onwards, and that English will remain the only medium of instruction. AfriForum will oppose this decision with further legal action, as Unisa remains the only option to many Afrikaans-speaking people who want to improve their qualifications.

With its urgent application tomorrow, AfriForum wants to prevent the implementation of the aforementioned policy, as many prospective students now have to decide about enrolment in 2017 and must have clarity on the University’s language offering.

With further legal action AfriForum will also attempt to reverse the decisions of the University’s Senate and Council on the language policy, as happened in the case against the University of the Free State.
