AfriBusiness will today convene with its legal team and affected individuals in the Brits area who fell victim to illegal land grabs over the weekend. Although the affected parties have approached the local police, their efforts have been unsuccessful and they therefore approached AfriBusiness as a last resort to protect their property. The organisation will now seek an urgent court order to prohibit the illegal take-over and occupation of these properties.

AfriBusiness had success with a similar case in Bronkhorstspruit in April this year when illegal land grabs infringed on the property rights of a farmer and a business owner. AfriBusiness was successful in obtaining an interim interdict within a period of three days. The organisation will therefore attempt to obtain an order in the Brits case with the same haste.

“More and more land grabs occur as the August elections approach. It is unfortunate that no other organisations seem willing to assist victims of illegal land grabs. AfriBusiness will continue to assist land grab victims with the resources at its disposal, however,” says Armand Greyling, Law and Policy Analyst at AfriBusiness.
