Law firm Adams & Adams has added yet another initiative to its already substantial list of contributions to South Africa’s creative world, this time confirming its sponsorship of the prestigious Southern Guild’s ICON Award.

The Southern Guild Foundation is a non-profit organisation established to bring about dynamic and targeted change in the South African design industry.

The Design Foundation’s Awards Programme is an annual event aimed at motivating the industry and its contributors and broadening awareness of the growth and progressions of South African design. The Awards relate directly to the ‘Business of Design’ for the winners and recognise excellence and facilitate future growth and development for emerging talents, designers and manufacturers.

“Our aim is to make a radical difference to the industry from the outset, targeting a range of issues from our specific areas of expertise. We want to give support to the development of designers, both established and emerging, helping to integrate good business models and building a more vibrant and professional design industry,” says Southern Guild co-founder Julian McGowan. “We hope to provide inspiration and encouragement, to provoke thinking, encourage discussion and debate, stimulate imaginations and help to make design businesses more profitable.”

“As Adams & Adams plays such an integral role in promoting and protecting the intellectual property rights of our flourishing South African creative / design industry, the Foundation is delighted that the firm will be partnering with us and sponsoring the 2014 ICON Award,”  says McGowan.

The ICON Award is given in recognition of the work done in the past twelve months by a highly regarded South African designer, acknowledging outstanding achievement, innovation and advancement of their career and their business practice.

Says Mariëtte du Plessis, senior partner at Adams & Adams:  “We have a passion for local design and are committed to supporting the local design industry.  South Africa has a long-established reputation for producing designers whose work is admired by the rest of the world.  The design contributions are fresh and highly innovative and meet international standards. ”But du Plessis is also quick to emphasise that South Africa has a reputation for not protecting their designs.  “The world is shrinking, information is travelling faster, and so is the theft of intellectual property.”

As the largest intellectual property firm in the Southern Hemisphere, Adams & Adams has a personal interest in protecting intellectual property rights.  “We are quick to respond to the intellectual property requirements of the design industry and admire the incredible talent of local designers and entrepreneurs like Laduma Ngxokolo, Atang Tshikare, Ronél Jordaan, Gregor Jenkins and many more.

“When the Southern Guild Foundation approached us to get involved, we were delighted.  We see this as an opportunity to provide South Africa’s cutting-edge creatives with vital information pertaining to building intellectual property protection which they can incorporate into their process and business plans.”

The 2014 Awards are being held on the 25th of February 2015 at GUILD Design Fair in Cape Town.
Adams & Adams is legal advisor to Design Indaba and sponsor of the Design Indaba Innovation Award, and the official attorneys to the Loeries and sponsor of the Young Creatives Award.
